Call for Volunteers

In 2009, CVAG, a  Crowthorne community action group, are instigating a survey of ancient and veteran trees in the Crowthorne District. A similar survey in Wokingham District has recorded over 2,000 veteran and other significant trees on their database. These records are sent to regional and national databases such as those of the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre (TVERC) and the Woodland Trust.

Said John Baster, the CVAG environment officer, “ Veteran trees are an irreplaceable part of our national heritage and an important factor in defining the character of the Crowthorne area, which includes parts of the ancient hunting lands of Windsor forest ”

Many old trees are to be found in Crowthorne area.  They are living evidence of our rural past and have great value as wildlife habitats. Many local people appreciate their beauty and importance and are concerned about the threats they face, particularly from development.

Since this is a major task, CVAG are calling for  volunteers who would like to help, either  by being on the organising committee or by volunteering to participate in small teams who will go out mapping our trees.

All volunteers will be provided with training in tree recognition and the procedures for recording trees, as well as suitable equipment such as tape measure. Generally volunteers go out in teams of 2-4. Some go at weekends whilst others prefer to make it a regular walk with friends during the week.

Said John Baster “This is an opportunity for anyone who enjoys a walk in the countryside to do something constructive for the community at the same time”

If you would like to help please contact John Baster on 01344 774007 for further information
